City sidewalks are littered with stuff. Not just the windblown trash and rainsoaked cigarette butts, but manhole covers, transformer vault coverplates, and utility panels.
Most are pure-utilitarian-ugly. But heading north along 3rd Street, near Market, I glanced down and saw not the typical battered, rusted hinged metal, but this beautifully rendered cow, stenciled onto what I guess is a water-hose access plate.
God bless the person whose gift to the world was to kneel down on a gum-splattered public sidewalk, unscrew the dirty platecover, take it home to their studio, clean it, mask it, paint it, and then unceremoniously return it, responsibly screwed back into service.
It absolutely made my day.
