Trekking out of the Big Pine Creek trail, we wearily stumbled across a herd of mule deer, heading up from the creek below and crossing our path. Despite our clanking and calling (attempts to get the deer to move on before the hound spotted them and took off on a wild deer-chase), they wouldn't budge, and we realized that we had split the herd, with a half-dozen or so still to make their way across our path. They eyed us steadily, but didn't seem spooked as much as just watchful for the stragglers of their group.
